War Detectives

North Ayrshire Council
War Detectives Initiative
Aims of project and roles of participants

Aim of War Detectives

The main aim of the project is to promote intergenerational learning and knowledge of World War II by creating opportunities for North Ayrshire pupils and adults from a variety of community groups to share experiences and reminiscences.  We aim to produce a digital record of the relationship between the generations.

Partners in the project

North Ayrshire Library and Information Service have identified community groups and individuals who are interested in working with children from our schools, to answer their research questions and to contribute ideas during video interviews.  Contacts with appropriate individuals have been made through People's War workshops promoted via the People's Network in public libraries.  The Veterans Reunited Development Group, currently working with the Royal British Legion to develop and promote commemorative events, have invited members to participate in the War Detectives project.

The ten primary schools are Brisbane, Cumbrae, Kelburn, Skelmorlie, St Mary's, Abbey, Blacklands, Corsehill, Pennyburn and Whitehirst Park.  Each school will elect six pupils to take part.  The schools involved will be supported by members of the Quality Improvement Team and the Education Resource Service.

Role of School

Schools need only elect the six students to be involved and its role will be minimal as the project is an extra-curricular initiative.

Role of Students

The students will be expected to attend an initial meeting to discuss the project and then attend time-tabled sessions of research, preparation, filming and presentation.  Each group of pupils will be given an area of enquiry, articulate the aims of their investigation and develop appropriate research questions.  By researching these themes, groups will each develop an area of expertise within the WWII topic.  They will then carry out an interview, recording and editing the information to present a finished movie.

With the aim of producing digital content for distribution and web presentation the students will also produce:
