| Johns, Eric | Captured by aliens |

| Smith, Emily | Astrid, the au pair from outer space |
![]() |
When Harry Henderson's mum announces that she wants to employ an au pair, he
is none too pleased. However, when he meets Astrid he realises very quickly
that there is something very special about her - he just can't quite
pinpoint what it is. Her endless questions about Harry and his baby brother,
her strange manner and her peculiar inquisitiveness about the simplest of
things make him wonder exactly what she is up to. But when Astrid tells her
young charge that she is an alien from a planet 500 light-years away, and
that her special, moving suitcase doubles up as a spaceship, Harry realises
that, just like Mary Poppins with her special carpetbag, she might go away
again all too soon... Emily Smith's gently funny novel is beautifully
observed and is written with a tender humour that allows all the characters
to behave naturally both within their home environment and with each other.
It also captures the wide-eyed innocence of children, and their willingness
to accept the extraordinary with a curiosity that is at once endearing and
awe-inspiring, making mere adults feel foolish for ever believing that
things are as straightforward as they seem. But, ultimately, Astrid, the
Au Pair from Outer Space is a story of one family's life, briefly
touched by the presence of a very special au pair, and is a clearly written,
uncomplicated book for children who are just beginning to gain confidence in
their reading abilities and who are looking for a strong story line to keep
them hooked as their self-assurance grows. 055254616x |

A much underrated and neglected gem of children's writing, The Water Babies is a book many people have heard of but few have actually read. It is a carefully-constructed C19th tale in which delicate, humorous sketches and caricatures of the era's wealthy and servant classes are contrasted with intricate studies of the urban poor. Unwittingly, the central figure Tom, a scrawny infant chimney-sweep, embarks on an adventurous, surreal underwater existence, which results in his dramatic moral progression. It can be read on a variety of levels - as a profound philosophical exploration; as a moral entreaty for the improvement of social conditions; as an early example of science fiction; or as an alternative magical children's world. The imagery is delightful and inventive and Kingsley writes with a deft, simple elegance that makes for very easy reading. There are many moments of truly exquisite poetry such as when Tom sits alone on a rock, listening to the sounds of the countryside animals in the cool night around him. |

The
story of Hanuman Singh, India , 1857-1858 "We watched General Rose's army moving towards us from the ramparts of the Fort. A sickle moon hung in the sky like a curved blade and the dull red granite of the Fort breathed out the day's heat. I marvelled at the neatness of the enemy's formation, as it progressed steadily towards us in the blue haze." 0 439 98108 5 |

Something terrible has happened. I can scarcely bring myself to write the
words. I AM TO START AT THE MILL ON MONDAY. "You said never," I cried to
Mother. Her face was white. "Oh Eliza," she said. "I'm so sorry. If there
was anything I could have done..." "Where am I to work?" I demanded. The
room was so quiet that I could hear myself breathe. "In the carding room.
Sickness. They need more hands." I wasn't Eliza any more, just a pair of
hands. Factory hands. 0439981182 |
