Local and family history - North Ayrshire's Yesterd@ys
North Ayrshire Libraries is embarking on an exciting Digitisation Project, and we are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help us.
Called North Ayrshire's Yesterd@ys, we are planning to build a legacy of accessible digitised resources for communities to access from a range of locations. We plan to achieve this by scanning images held in the photograph collection at The Vennel Local and Family History Centre, based in Irvine, and have them displayed via the Flickr website, along with detailed information about the history portrayed in each image.
We are asking groups, museums and individuals to become involved through sharing your own images and adding them to the collection. Do you have a drawer of scenic pictures of your town in North Ayrshire that you took 20 years ago, or even yesterday? By scanning your images, you would be improving your IT skills, as well as participating in a very worthwhile community project. North Ayrshire Libraries will supply all the tools needed and we would have staff available to provide training and offer support throughout the project.
Photographs that are included would be credited to the owner on the Flickr website and, where appropriate, a link would be created either to an individual's website or to a group that they are a member of, to generate publicity.
This is an exciting venture and a great opportunity for the Library Service to work together with as many local groups and individuals as possible to help create an outstanding pictorial history of North Ayrshire's images to be shared with other enthusiasts around the world.
This project is being funded by Scottish Government Public Library Improvement Fund.
If you would like more information on the project, then please do not hesitate to contact Jill McColl or Norma Cullen at The Vennel Local and Family History Centre on 01294 275059 or email: jmccoll@north-ayrshire.gov.uk
