Lifelong learning and computers

Study centres, in North Ayrshire libraries, offer free computer usage with a high speed internet connection. PCs have Windows XP and Office 2003 installed on them and additional software is available to use, on request, in library study centres. Card readers (allows you to quickly transfer photographs from a digital camera to a PC) and CD writers are available in most libraries (please ask a member of staff).

Free wireless Internet access (wi-fi) is now available at Irvine, Kilwinning, Largs and Saltcoats libraries. Please read the following guidelines and the Council's wi-fi acceptable use policy for using your laptop in our libraries: Wi-Fi: free wireless Internet access (pdf).

You can also book your pc online using the Online Computer Booking form.

A wide range of accessibility resources are available to help you to use our study centres in North Ayrshire libraries, we offer: large monitors; large keyboards; screen filters; track balls; portable loop systems; adjustable desks; wrist rests and ReadPlease 2003 software (reads text on the screen).

The following guides demonstrate how to change the accessibility options in Windows XP:

  • Visual Impairment (pdf, 903Kb)
  • Hearing Impairment (pdf, 228Kb)

Please speak with a member of staff if you would like to use any of these resources.

As part of our commitment to lifelong learning, we offer free tuition in basic computer skills and a range of themed workshops, including an introduction to working with digital photographs.

If you are new to using computers, check out our range of computer guides that are available to download or our collection of IT and Lifestyle books.
