Source One: Gas Masks to be Distributed 


Summary: (from the Minutes of a meeting of Ayr County Council) discussion on whether gas masks to be issued to the public with preference given to vulnerable areas, or should they be kept in store and given out only when needed. 195,750 gas masks to be distributed throughout the County.

Summary: (from Minutes of a meeting of Ayr County Council) proposal that an Emergency Committee should not be appointed as it would only put fear into the public’s minds and they would think that a crisis had arisen.

Source Three: 17 tons of gas masks: 34,000 arrive in Ardrossan for distribution in District


Summary: respirators arrived in Ardrossan to be immediately distributed throughout the neighbouring towns as soon as possible.

Summary:Total enrolments for ARP (air raid precautions) in the County totalled 7,200.

Source Five: Gas Masks: the work of assembly and distribution


Summary: Irvine’s fine efforts; locals put in the biggest, most strenuous spell of voluntary work; they assembled 25,000 gas masks and the fitting and distribution of between 12,000 and 13,000 of these masks to the men, women and children of the town.
