Transport Strategies

In February the Scottish Executive published the revised Guidance on Local Transport Strategies.  Local transport strategies are a way in which local authorities are able to detail how they intend to deliver on national transport objectives at a local level, and provide an action plan for meeting local challenges and objectives.

The overall aim of the Scottish Executive is to promote economic growth, social inclusion, health and protection of our environment through a safe, integrated, effective and efficient transport system.

Within the development of a local and national transport strategy, particular consideration should be given to assessing and meeting the transport needs of different groups of people, including children and young people.

Children and young people are amongst those who should be actively involved in the development and implementation of the strategy while School Travel Co-ordinators may also play a role in the process.

Most strategies will be developed by local authorities during 2005-6, although no deadline has been set by the Scottish Executive for their completion.

School Travel Plans

Help us find out how you choose to get to and from school and why. Working together to try and
encourage yourself and your parents to walk or cycle some of the way.

St John's Primary School pupils walk to school

How?

Each school, with the help of the School Travel Plan Officer, will set up a group to
co-ordinate the Travel Plan.
The entire school fills in an online travel survey.

The adults will get a paper survey
All the information from the surveys is added up to show the percentages.
This means how many pupils out of 100. For instance if 20 pupils out of a school of 240 come to school by scooter the survey will say that 8% of pupils come by scooter. Your teachers may explain this in greater detail.
The group, be it your Eco school, Pupil Council or Travel Team, use this information to design your schools very own travel plan.

A School Travel Plan:

Ø       Describes how pupils travel to school

Ø       States how pupils wish to travel to school

Ø       Details issues that the pupils, parents and teachers may have about the school journey

Ø       The group agree which issues they should target and prioritise

Ø       The group also agree the numbers or percentages of people they want to be walking or cycling in over the next year.

Ø       The group can also ask the local Road Safety Officer and/ or Community Police Officer to sign a statement on the travel plan to show their support

Ø       In the year following the publication of the School Travel Plan the group will promote the travel plan and set out a time table for the issues raised to be dealt with

Ø       The group will also look to involving the entire school and local community.

Ø       After a year the school will re-survey and re-assess.

How can we help you?

The School Travel Plan Officer is there to help you through the process and sit on any group formed.

The online computerised survey, reduces the amount of paper waste and time to add up the surveys

Depending on the time of year the School Travel Plan Officer will add up the paper surveys completed by your parents

There are also 10 Walk to School Week banners that can be booked out for the Walk to School Week or health weeks

Also 2 pop up banners (for inside only) which can be used at Health Weeks, Parent Evenings, Parent Inductions etc.

Materials will be made available to interested schools for the Walk to School Week in October

There are a limited number of pedometers that can be made available.
