Bright New Scotland - Transport Resources Road Safety Education
Transport Strategies
In February the Scottish Executive published the revised Guidance on Local Transport Strategies. Local transport strategies are a way in which local authorities are able to detail how they intend to deliver on national transport objectives at a local level, and provide an action plan for meeting local challenges and objectives.
The overall aim of the Scottish Executive is to promote economic growth, social inclusion, health and protection of our environment through a safe, integrated, effective and efficient transport system.
Within the development of a local and national transport strategy, particular consideration should be given to assessing and meeting the transport needs of different groups of people, including children and young people.
Children and young people are amongst those who should be actively involved in the development and implementation of the strategy while School Travel Co-ordinators may also play a role in the process.
Most strategies will be developed by local authorities during 2005-6, although no deadline has been set by the Scottish Executive for their completion.

A School Travel Plan:
Ø Describes how pupils travel to school
Ø States how pupils wish to travel to school
Ø Details issues that the pupils, parents and teachers may have about the school journey
Ø The group agree which issues they should target and prioritise
Ø The group also agree the numbers or percentages of people they want to be walking or cycling in over the next year.
Ø The group can also ask the local Road Safety Officer and/ or Community Police Officer to sign a statement on the travel plan to show their support
Ø In the year following the publication of the School Travel Plan the group will promote the travel plan and set out a time table for the issues raised to be dealt with
Ø The group will also look to involving the entire school and local community.
Ø After a year the school will re-survey and re-assess.
