Source Evaluation Practice


 

The assessment is designed to test your knowledge and understanding of the topic as well as your ability to handle historical sources. Therefore you have to show you can evaluate the sources in relation to the sources presented in the exam.

 

 

You should:

 

  • take account of the origin & purpose of the source,

 

  • interpret the content of sources accurately

 

  • show your knowledge of the immediate context of a source

 

  • show your knowledge of the wider historical context

 

  • compare sources, identifying & explaining similarities & differences between them.

 

  • present a balanced view of sources

 

 

 

This section contains practice and suggestions to help you practise with the above performance criteria:

 

 

  • commenting on origin & purpose

 

  • interpreting the content of the sources

 

  • relating the source to the crisis the source refers to (the immediate context)

 

  • relating a source to the wider issues and events (wider historical context)

 

  • comparing sources

 

  • presenting a balanced view (strengths & weaknesses)

Task 1:

 

Look at the examples of sources used in the exam in the past. Practise commenting on:

 

  • origin (author, date) & purpose
  • interpreting the content
  • the immediate context
  • the wider context
  • the strengths of the source
  • the weaknesses of the source.
